Let me introduce myself. I am Tammy Haynes and I’m a neuropsychologist. I specialize in diagnosing developmental and neurological disorders in particular epilepsy and degenerative disorders such as dementia. I’ve worked in hospitals, outpatient clinics and universities across the caribbean, the UK and the USA.
The human brain is a complex and fascinating organ that controls our thoughts, emotions, and behaviors. Neuropsychology is a field of psychology that focuses on the relationship between the brain and behavior. It examines how different parts of the brain work together to produce behavior and how changes or damage to the brain can affect our cognitive, emotional, and behavioral functions.
Here is a little bit about my academic background: I graduated with a BSc. (Hons) in Psychology in the first cohort of psychology majors from the University of the West Indies in Jamaica. I completed an accelerated M.Sc. in Cognitive Science at the University of Birmingham in England, where I conducted research on behalf of NASA in the psychological aspects of movement disorders. I returned to Jamaica in 1999 and advocated for the development of a PhD in Clinical Psychology. In 2006, I became the first graduate of the Clinical Psychology Doctoral Program at the University of the West Indies. I realized the Caribbean desperately needed qualified professionals in this highly specialized field, so I went on to post-doctoral training in Neuropsychology at Emory University in Atlanta and Yale University school of medicine, New Haven, Connecticut.
I love the people I meet in my practice and I am obsessed by the 3 pound universe in our heads. I have a private practice in Orlando, Florida and I have telehealth practices in Jamaica and an Outpatient clinic in Antigua and Barbuda, where I provide diagnostic and rehabilitation services in Neuropsychology and Clinical Psychology for adults and children. I specialize in Epilepsy, degenerative neurocognitive disorders as well as Stroke. I enjoy world travel, food, a good book, intellectual great vino and good company.. oh not to mention a cool river.
Why Eat Life whole?
Two years ago on a conference afternoon in Barcelona, Spain, a key note speakers anecdote struck me like a bolt of lightning: “Dementia is a disease that begins in your 40’s!” Damn! Holy S**T! I mean I knew this intellectually and academically but for some reason it hit home like a punch in the throat. Its possible it had something to do with the fact that then I was in the departure lounge of my 40’s… but I digress. Many of the people I care for in my practice arrive at my door in distress as they face what could be daunting news of what the rest of their lives will look like. Frustrated, after years of delivering bad news and recommending ways to adapt as disease takes its toll, I asked myself what else can I do to really make an impact?!
It took two years to marinate but I decided to develop a roadmap for vibrant aging that everyone could use. This is what Eat Life Whole is all about. Posts, information, resources on incorporating health, mental wellness, purpose, love, travel, art, community and spirituality all in one place. Designed to help us flow into the best years of our lives.
